Live stories in Brighton

17 July 2008

Short Fuse is a monthly literary club and Brighton's only night promoting the short story and local and national writing talent.

Writers Tara Gould and Polly Tuckett set up Short Fuse with the intention of providing a space for writers of short stories to read their work to an audience, whether published or not. By extension, they hope to create a community of writers and readers, or listeners, making the pleasure of each a less solitary pursuit.

Each month, four writers read a story chosen from received submissions, and selection is based purely on the quality of the writing.

Short Fuse aims to be a low key, unstuffy event. Held in the Studio Bar of Brighton's Komedia, the venue has a relaxed cabaret feel, and between readings people have the chance to chat and drink to a backdrop of great music.

Short-story writers and enthusiasts Paul Blaney and Rebecca Lattin-Rawstrone set up Tales of the Decongested to raise the profile of the short story in London and to encourage and showcase new talent.

Their regular meetings, held on the last Friday of each month at Foyles, Charing Cross Road, London, give writers the opportunity to read from their work.

They published Tales of the DeCongested Volume 1 in June 2006 under their own imprint, Apis Books, which specialises in short fiction.

Story Readers' Day

26 July 2008

Readers' Day in Edinburgh at Sandeman House, Scottish Book Trust

The Story campaign is running a series of Readers’ Days in Edinburgh, Manchester and London over the coming months. Full details on the Manchester (Saturday 27 September in association with Manchester Libraries and Comma Press) and London days will follow.

Readers' Days are particularly aimed at members of reading groups, but are of interest to anyone who enjoys books and wants to find out more about authors, publishers, and how the literary world operates.

Scottish Book Trust will be hosting an afternoon of events from 2.00 to 6.00pm on 26 July featuring the award-winning writer Anne Donovan (winner of an SAC Book Award and shortlisted for the Orange Prize for her first novel, Buddha Da) and exploring the books world from a number of perspectives, including a workshop on cover design by Canongate Books' Art Director and a session on commissioning and dramatising stories for radio by a BBC Radio Scotland producer.

Tickets for the day are £8 (£5 for concessions) and include tea/coffee and cake. There will be a book swap stall, so please bring along a book (or books) that you don't think you'll re-read yourself, to swap on the day.

It is recommended that you book tickets in advance - please contact the box office of the Scottish Storytelling Centre on 0131 556 9579 (Monday to Saturday 10.00 am - 6.00 pm).
